After inclement weather canceled Saturday’s scheduled regular-season opener with Columbia International University, the Trinity Baptist College Eagles women’s soccer team took the field Monday morning and opened the season with the Crusaders of Evangel University out of Springfield, Missouri. Evangel won it 5-1. The game took place at Southeastern University as part of the 2017 SEU Invitational.
Evangel is a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Daisa Shepherd scored her first collegiate goal when she connected with 40 seconds remaining in the first half. Shepherd took a pass from Kareema Mitchell and found the back of the net to pull the Eagles to within a goal at 2-1. Evangel had scored twice within the previous six minutes when Lilly Axtell (Minute 39) and Brooke Pignari (Minute 44) gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Shepherd’s goal came just 23 seconds later to make the score 2-1 at the half.
The score remained 2-1 until Evangel took control midway through the second half. Brooke Todd (Minute 64) and Amber Ellis (Minute 65) gave the Crusaders some insurance, and Pignari scored her second goal near the end.
The Eagles totaled seven shots on the morning with Shepherd taking three and Mitchell shooting twice. Goalkeeper Courtney Blanset saved 10 of Evangel’s 16 shots on goal.
The Eagles will play their next three games at Trinity with the first two against NCCAA Division 2 South Region opponents. First, Bob Jones University comes to town on Saturday, September 9, with a 2:00 p.m. EDT scheduled kickoff. Next, the Eagles will host Toccoa Fall College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15.
