Three different Eagles scored goals, and the backfield once again played excellent defense as the Trinity Baptist College women’s soccer team defeated the NAIA Brewton-Parker College Barons 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Trinity.
Alex Viera started the scoring seventeen minutes into the game. Kareema Mitchell found Viera wide open downfield and lofted a long pass over the Barons’ defenders. Viera then struck inside the left post to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Brewton Parker’s Caitlyn Bassett evened the score two minutes later when Sydni Wilkinson hit her with a cross pass from the right corner; Bassett had an open net and volleyed it in for the goal.
The Eagles took the lead for good in Minute 24. Arianna Elliot scored for the second consecutive day when she drove a free direct kick from well over 20 yards out into the top left corner.
Elliot scored via a penalty kick in Friday’s game with Toccoa Falls College.
The final tally went to Dasia Shepherd, who — after scoring four times Friday — hit her fifth goal in two games. Mitchell picked up her second assist with another long pass from midfield, and Shepherd beat goalkeeper Kaylee Jones to the ball and scored the empty-net goal.
Jones had five saves for Brewton-Parker, and center back Graviela Fonseca was the defensive player of the game. Fonseca manned all parts of the backfield and blocked numerous Eagles pass and shot attempts. Courtney Blanset saved three for Trinity, and her defense allowed only four Baron shot attempts. Trinity managed 21 shots, nine on goal.
The Eagles will play their next four games on the road, beginning with LaGrange College on Tuesday, September 19. The team will then travel to Toccoa Falls College (September 29), Dalton State College (September 30), and Warner University (October 3) before returning home on October 7 when they host Regent University at 2:00 p.m. EDT as part of a women’s/men’s double-header.
