Dasia Shepherd tied the team record for goals in game, and Kristin Pabon led the defense as Trinity Baptist College women’s soccer defeated Toccoa Falls College 5-1 Friday afternoon at home. This match was the first in the South Region for each team.
Shepherd scored the first three goals of the game and added a fourth late in the second half to tie teammate Alex Viera, who turned the trick last season, for the team record.
Shepherd put Trinity on the board midway through the first half on a fast break for Goal # 1. Eight minutes later, she broke free once again and connected from just in front of the net to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Pabon blocked three Toccoa shot attempts in between those goals, and she, Alex Goodwin, and Jennifer Jeffery played brick-wall-style defense to keep Toccoa away from the net. The Eagles took that 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Toccoa Falls cut the lead in half in Minute 50 when Cora Gowens connected on a hook shot from the left side to make the score 2-1. Trinity’s defense, however, would limit Toccoa to just that one goal, and Courtney Blanset saved eight to preserve the lead.
Shepherd completed the hat trick in Minute 72 on another fast break after receiving a long pass up field from Kareema Mitchell. Arianna Elliot made the score 4-1 with a penalty-kick goal just one minute later. Shepherd finished the scoring by picking up the rebound off her own first attempt and tapped it in to tie the record and put up the game’s final tally.
The Eagles are now 1-0 in South Region play. On Saturday, they will the NAIA’s Brewton-Parker Barons. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. EDT. The Eagles will then play their next four games on the road between September 19 and October 3, including a trip to Toccoa Falls on September 29.
