The 2016-2017 basketball season has ended for the Trinity Baptist College Eagles, but two players earned honors at this year’s South Region Tournament banquet.
Senior Julianna Calice and freshman Ta’Naisa Pasters were named to the 2017 All-South Region team. Calice landed on the first team and Pasters hit the second team.
Calice finished the season and her career at Trinity Baptist College with the honor. She was the South Region’s leading scorer and #2 in all of NCCAA Division 2 this season. Over her four-year tenure at Trinity, she amassed 1,067 career points. She was the 2015-2016 South Region Player of the Year, and she was in the final running for the award again this season.
Pasters was second on the team in scoring as a freshman. A torn ACL ended her season a little early, but she impressed the South Region coaches enough to earn her way onto the All-Region roster in her first season as a college player.
The Eagles won the South Region quarterfinal in comeback fashion to defeat Toccoa Falls College 57-46. They lost to Pensacola Christian in the semifinal but still celebrated a successful 7-5 record within the region.
The Eagles will lose Calice and fellow senior Teisa Keith to graduation, but this team has a number of young and talented freshmen that make the next few years look very promising for head coach Pat Milligan and assistant coach Judy Allen.
Coach Milligan recalls the goals he set for the season with his young Lady Eagles team and the success he had in accomplishing those goals:
“1. Recruit Christian young ladies with character. We did.
2. Play well in NCCAA games. With a record of 7-5, we did.
3. Advance in the regional tournament. We did.”
Coach Milligan can return up to eight players for 2017-18, beginning with Pasters. Also set to return are current freshmen Diamond Alford, Jill Thurston, Jessica Silva, Emily Merritt, Megan Gooden, Ashlyn Pilcher, and Shaina Hill.
“Overall, a success year,” Milligan said. “Watch out for the future with our returning players and a lot of new recruits. Fans will want to follow this women’s basketball team as we start signing recruits for 2017-18.”
Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Lady Eagles and their successful season in NCCAA Division 2 South Region play.
