After trailing by eight early in the second half, the Trinity Baptist College Lady Eagles came back to win Round 1 of the NCCAA Division 2 South Region Tournament 56-47 over the Screaming Eagles of Toccoa Falls College in North Georgia.

Julianna Calice led the way with 29 points, but head coach Pat Milligan credits freshman Shaina Hill for “coming up big’ with 11 points. Hill was 5 for 12 (42%) from the field, and she sank a crucial free throw to help the Eagles come from behind. Calice was 9 for 20 (45%) from the field including 5 for 10 from three-point range as she led the Eagles to victory. Coach Milligan also proclaimed a “super job by the entire team.”

Toccoa Falls outscored Trinity 18-14 in the first quarter, but Trinity won the second quarter 15-11 to force a tied halftime score of 29-29. Toccoa scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a 37-29 lead before the Eagles forged ahead on a 15-6 run to end the period with a one-point lead.

Trinity’s defense held Toccoa Falls to four points in the fourth quarter while the Eagles themselves scored 12 in the fourth to put up the final score. Five of those points came at the line, and the Eagles had seven three-point shots overall.

Jessica Silva dropped in seven points in the Eagles’ win, and Diamond Alford scored four while Megan Gooden and Tesia Keith each contributed two. Emily Merrit hit a free throw.

Three Toccoa players hit double digits in scoring: Madison Johnson (12), Beth Brown (10), and Paige Town (10). Keijah Gaines scored eight while Jordan Poole added five and Asia Skinner scored two.

Before the game, the Eagles participated in the Christian Service Outreach Food Drive for Shirley’s Shelter, a program designed to help families in need.

The Eagles advance to the semifinal Friday night to face Pensacola Christian College with a 7:00 p.m. EST tip-off. The winner will play the victor of Friday’s other semifinal match-up between Trinity College of Florida and Bob Jones University for the South Region title Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
