Trinity Baptist College Eagles Soccer played a men/women double-header on the road at South Region opponent Bob Jones University Saturday evening. The men played to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods while the ladies took a loss.
Men: Trinity 1, Bob Jones 1
Josh Briones tied the game at 1-1 with a slap shot inside the box in Minute 54. He grabbed a loose ball and scored the goal that would eventually send the game into overtime.
Trinity won the ball control battle throughout both halves and both overtime periods, but the Eagles met up with a very solid Bruins defense that kept the game tied. After a scoreless first half, the game was tied at the intermission.
Danyon Moore scored just two minutes into the second half to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Defensively, Moore was instrumental in keeping Trinity out of the net.
Jean Hillaire saved the game by diving in front of a Bruins shot right in front of the goal with three minutes left in the second overtime period. Hillaire and Tcharlentz Milius were just as stingy in the Eagles’ backfield as Moore was for the Bruins.
Both goalkeepers — Trinity’s Kyle Aultman and Bob Jones’s Andrew Kester — were exceptional in goal. Each made crucial diving saves late in the game and in overtime. Aultman saved 5 of 6 shots on goal for the Eagles, and Kester saved 10 of 11 for the Bruins.
Women: Bob Jones 5, Trinity 1
In the women’s game, Bob Jones took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a penalty kick from Kaitlyn Hummel. No other scoring occurred in the half.
The Bruins’ Abby Davis, though, scored twice within three minutes of resuming play in the second half. Davis was assisted by Hummel in Minute 47, and 1:40 later, she scored on her third attempt of the sequence after two saves from Courtney Blanset that both hit the ground in front of Davis.
The Bruins added two more goals (Kristyn Rygh, Anna Daulton) throughout the remainder of the game.
Arianna Elliot scored Trinity’s only goal with 4:48 left to play. Elliot took five total shots, three on goal, and Kareema Mitchell had two. Blanset saved 8 of 14 Bruins shots on goal, and Bob Jones goalkeeper Jessica Baun saved 6 of Trinity’s 7.
The women will host Bob Jones on Thursday, October 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EDT. The gentlemen are off until October 21, when both teams will play on Homecoming Saturday. The ladies will face Florida National University at 2:00 p.m. while the gentlemen take on South Region rival Pensacola Christian College at 4:30. Each team will then have one home game and one away game left on the regular schedule.
The South Region tournaments begin on Thursday, November 2. The men will play at Bob Jones University while Trinity will host the women’s bracket.
