Alvaro Poveda, Juan Grimaldo, and Angelo Fernandez provided the offense, and the defense held the opposition to two shots on goal as the Trinity Baptist College Eagles defeated the NCAA Division III LaGrange College Panthers 3-1 to give Trinity a sweep of the men’s/women’s double header in mid Georgia.
Tuesday’s win is the second in a row over NCAA competition. Trinity defeated Shorter University 4-3 on August 31.
Poveda put the Eagles on the board with an goal just 3:06 into the game. He received a pass from Clayton McDaniel (assist) and deposited the ball into the net to give the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish.
Grimaldo extended the lead in Minute 23 with a penalty kick goal, and the Eagles took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Fernandez added insurance with a slap shot at the edge of the penalty box in Minute 57 thanks to Poveda’s assist. The Eagles continued to play aggressively, but Panthers goalkeeper Cory Aycock made a number of terrific saves late in the game and finished with 10 saves overall.
LaGrange cut the lead to 3-1 with 13:27 left to play thanks to Michale Bruno‘s assist that allowed Erick Sterm to score his sixth goal of the season. Sterm’s shot was the only one of three total attempts to officially count as on goal.
Jean Hillaire made an unofficial save a few minutes later when Kyle Aultman came out of the goal box to field a loose ball. A Panther attacker reached the ball first and hit it hard toward the goal, but a very alert Hillaire got his body in front of the ball to deflect it away.
The Eagles will travel to Pensacola Christian College on Friday, September 22, for a South Region match-up with their biggest rival and namesake. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central time (8:00 Eastern). The team will travel to Toccoa Falls College and Dalton State College on September 29 and 30, respectively, before returning home for Game 2 of the Eagles’ men’s/women’s double-header with Regent University.
