TBC Eagles Men’s Basketball had a very successful season in 2016-2017, advancing to the South Region semifinal. The new season is still a few months away, but head coach John D. Jones continues to build a championship-caliber roster. This week, Coach Jones has added a player with a very good and unique story.
Andrew Bowman — Glen St. Mary, Florida
Andrew, age 29, played basketball at Baker County High School from 2002-2006. He started on JV as a freshman before moving up to varsity for his final three years under Coach Charles Ruise. Andrew is the son of William and Verna Bowman. Andrew earned the best rebounder award in 2005-2006, and he was a member of the 2003-2004 Florida First Coast Classic champions and Class 3A, District 3 Runner-Up.
Although Andrew has not played school basketball since his graduation, he has played in YMCA leagues and other leagues around town. He also played one year of JV football and 3 years of varsity football at BCHS as well as semi-pro football here in Jacksonville. He brings experience and leadership to the Eagles’ roster.
Andrew chose Trinity Baptist College for a number of reasons, most notably “to continue to grow spiritually and be around individuals who will help me do so,” he proclaimed. “I grew up in church and through life I have made my mistakes like anyone else; none of us are perfect, and all we can do is strive to be so.” He continued: “This is where I should be rather than any another school. Things happen for a reason, and the past few months have been life-changing for me…. I was led here, and I am very excited about the future.”
After college, Andrew plans to coach and remain involved with a school. “I have a passion for helping people, and that is where I can definitely be of assistance to the youth in a big way,” he stated. “I also recently started a non-profit organization geared to helping underprivileged youth get assistance in athletics and continue their education. If I do nothing else, I will ensure that it becomes successful and I help as many youth in our community succeed as possible.” The organization is called We Are HYPE, Inc. “HYPE” stands for ‘Helping Young People Everywhere.”
Andrew’s live verse is Romans 3:23, which says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” He also holds true to Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” — and Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
Trinity gives its sincerest welcome to Andrew Bowman.
