Marcus Dixon tied for the game high with 19 points, and three teammates hit double digits as Trinity Baptist College edged out South Region rival Pensacola Christian College 82-76 in a thrilling game Tuesday night at Trinity.

Dixon pit up 10 of his 19 points in the first half in leading Trinity to a 35-27 lead at the intermission. He was also the game’s leading rebounder with 12 and made three crucial free throws in the latter portions of the second half to keep Pensacola at bay.

Trinity hit 16 of 24 free-throw attempts in the second half and shot 66% overall from the line while also sinking 48% of all field goals, including 52% of them in the second half.

Marquis Duncanson and Jykayle Walker each scored 17 points and combined for 14 successful free throws in 19 attempts. Walker was 8 for 8 from the line and added two slam dunks that sparked the Trinity team and ignited the capacity crowd in the bleachers.

Chandler RiversĀ completed an alley-oop to put Trinity ahead 5-2 early in the first half, and Trinity held that lead until well into the second. Rivers had 15 points and six rebounds on the night. Marquel Perry (9), Andrew Bowman (4), and Zack Norris (2) all contributed points in the win.

Pensacola’s Andrew Thomas tied Dixon with 19 points, and he was clutch in the second half. Pensacola scored the first 12 points of the second half to take a 39-35 lead, their first lead since scoring the game’s first basket. The game went back and forth from that point on. John Clay (11), Ian Johnson (10), and Deonte Hallums (10) also scored in double digits, and Clay’s two second-half three pointers kept the game close. Six more Pensacola players contributed points in the effort.

Pensacola shot well at the line, hitting 22 of 33 attempts. The team also topped 50% shooting from the field in the second half, including that 12-point run out of the locker room. Rebounds were nearly identical, but Pensacola pulled in 32 of them compared to Trinity’s 31.

Trinity has two games left in the regular season, both within the South Region. On Friday, the Eagles will host Toccoa Falls College in a women’s/men’s double-header beginning with the ladies at 5:00 p.m. EST. The men will follow at 7:00 p.m. Trinity’s men’s team will then finish the regular season on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Johnson University of Florida in Kissimmee.

The South Region tournament will take place at Pensacola Christian College between February 22 and 24. Final seeding is still undetermined at this time.
